Therapeutic Riding

Equine therapy offers a documented and demonstrated successful alternative to traditional methods of treatment for a wide range of physical and emotional challenges. Equine therapy success knows no age or gender limitation. Horses like humans have an innate desire to bond and build trust, each with a unique personality. Unlike humans horses are without the interference of social and economic pressure. The survival of the equine as a prey animal has necessitated that they assess their surroundings and know whether there is danger or camaraderie in their midst.

Equine-Human Interaction

The need to assess makes the horse particularly aware of human needs and frailties. The size and power of the horse requires a respect from the human companion; this is where the bond begins. Those not familiar with equine behavior quickly learn how voice and touch are critical to building trust. Conversely humans depend significantly upon pure emotion. Recognition of non-emotional senses and stimuli support an alternative approach to emotional and physical healing. Mounted, the student becomes aware of their leg and core strength and overall coordination. Balance and self-awareness is developed through practice at the walk and trot. Cognitive development is encouraged through manipulating pre-determined riding patterns. Riding skill development is fun, challenging, and rewarding. Groundwork develops a mutual respect for space, and encourages an understanding of the physical and nutritional care required by the animal much larger and stronger than us. 2 Juelena Attard, Hope Horse Ranch director is certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (P.A.T.H). Juelena has twenty-five years of riding experience, complemented by a degree in human behavior. Juelena continues to advance her teaching skills by attending clinics and horsemanship events. The best teacher remains a student. The environment at Hope Horse Ranch supports respect for self, others, and animals. While horses are the principal animal at Hope ranch, Juelena also maintains, chickens, donkeys, goats, miniature pigs, and exotic birds.
